The Rapture 612019-01r and Riot 612020-01r Presentation Illustrations have a date of January 2, 1987. I’m assuming that was the date they were illustrated, but it could be the approval date. Rapture had a much different look than what we see in the cartoon. She had completely short hair, and cutouts on the sides of her dress. An overlay was attached to the illustration with ink hash marks indicating to add fishnet tights and fishnet patches put in those cutouts. The version of the dress Carleigh Hoff had in the “OOOOO… YES!!!” Polaroid reflects that change. Later the oversized collars were added. There is no indication of when Rapture’s hair was changed to include a ponytail/mullet look, but pictures were sent to Sunbow with the collars and longer hair around April of 1987.
Riot and Minx are virtually unchanged from the Presentation Illustrations. Only a few accessories and shoes changed for both. Riot’s guitar was changed to a black version of Shana’s guitar for the prototype images sent to Sunbow. But like the head molds used for Rapture and Riot, Hasbro was just using what they had available while the new molds were being created. With the prototypes sold on eBay, the heads were updated with the new molds, and Riot’s guitar was also updated to the new mold that matches his Presentation Illustration. Only the color changed from yellow to black and the graphics changed. Riot’s guitar was featured in 5205-64 "Change of Heart" and 5205-65 "Riot’s Hope."
Rapture and Minx were not illustrated with instruments. Rapture was given a black version of Roxy’s guitar and Minx was given a black and yellow version of a “Video Madness” tambourine. Between the Sunbow prototype pictures and the prototypes sold on eBay, Rapture’s guitar was given a graphic sticker look. Rapture’s guitar starting in 5205-58 "The Stingers Hit Town part 1," matched the eBay prototype. Minx was given a stand-up keyboard synthesizer in the cartoon, but that was probably a plot device. Minx’s synthesizer was named Entropy, and was going to be manipulated by Techrat. That was a variation on the concept from the abandoned Sunbow Jem movie with the Mongrels. |
