Grey's Anatomy star and photographer Brad Everett Young was one of our own. Love him or hate him, he was the founder of “Jem’s Space” on myspace.com. He shared some great photography of Jem dolls, fashions, and prototypes. The information was not always correct, because his main source didn’t really have a connection to the Jem line. He is a devastating loss to the Jem community.

Super Stars and other bagged JEM dolls.

Transgender Rob is in the fashion he came with Transgender "Rio 87"
who was was nude, so I dressed him in RnC Jem's Dress

So what are the Super Stars dolls? Well they are dolls that ended up being sold to another company and sold as a generic bag doll. There were a lot of them that showed up in Sears after Jem was canceled. These dolls were sold at Pic'n Save in Califorina. The dolls were sold for 99¢, and then discounted to 2 for ¢99. Big Lots bought the Pic'n Save stores, in 1997, but the stores were not renamed Big Lots until around 2002. Some can still be purchased in dollar stores in Canada, as recently as last year (2006.)

It's was through that Hasbro sold these dolls to "M Star" after the Jem line was canceled. I have also heard from a Hasbro Employee that the factory that made the dolls sold these rejects without Hasbro knowledge or permission.

What we know for sure:

  • Most of these dolls seem to be 1st issue H32 Holograms and H32 Misfits. There has been reports of 2nd issue Holograms, maybe even Raya, Danse, and Video ... if there are Super Stars versions of these dolls it is very rare. Most of the fashions are 1st issue Holograms and Misfits fashions, with some exceptions. (Examples: The white socks are from a Moondreamers tights. Some doll come with cut off tights with a pink and 2 black strips, the origin of this fabric has not been linked to a Hasbro doll.)
  • H-1 Rio, H-1 Rob from Maxie, and this long purple haired Rob (named as Craig Phillips - in the Jem fan community) comes with female Jem bodies and Holograms/Misfits clothing.
(this Craig Phillips/Rob head is really intended for Rio in 1987)
  • There are also generic versions of Maxie with different color hair. These usually come with generic bodies and clothing. Many Rio and Robs also come with the generic bodes.

These packages say Made in China, but most of the doll features are H32 - "Made in Hong Kong" and "Assembled in China, Packaged in Hong Kong." dolls. These Jem bodies are almost always the "no location" version of the dolls. They have ball wrist, slimmer hips, and a little shorter. The heads usually have ©Hasbro and has the first letter of the dolls name. These are all features found on some H32 Hong Kong dolls, but not China dolls. And not to be confused with H44 Holograms that have "Hong Kong" on their backs. Also 1st issue Rio is a Hong Kong only doll. Only 2nd issue Rio's head was Made in China. Just when it seems like it must be a Hong Kong thing, you have Maxie heads, and Maxie seems to have only been made in China.

There is a rumor that a Pizzazz doll was found with copper or red hair. This would also be very rare.

Typical Super Stars dolls
Aja is wearing Aja's top and skirt, Roxy's pants, and the typical Super Stars doll socks.* Kimber is wearing Aja's top, Kimber's pants, and the typical Super Stars doll socks.* Stormer has two left hands. She is wearing Aja's top, Kimber's pants, and the typical Super Stars doll socks.*

Aja has brown streaks in her hair. She is wearing Aja's top, Kimber's pants, and the typical Super Stars doll socks. This Aja has leggings that have never been seen in the Jem world. She is also wearing Aja's top, belt, and skirt. Shana with a white body. Her hair bow is also too pink. She is wearing Aja's top, Roxy's pants, and the typical Super Stars doll socks.

It is rumored that Hasbro was going to release "Craig Phillips" (Rio 87) with Raya. The sales of Craig and Raya doll would indicate which character was to be Jem's new drummer. Christy the writer of the show said that there is no way this doll could be Craig, as he was a character she made. She also said that the idea of having a drummer contest to promote the Raya doll was her idea, and did not come from Hasbro. Two Hasbro employees also told me they knew nothing of this Craig doll or a contest between Raya and Craig.

(this Craig Phillips/Rob head is really intended for Rio in 1987) It would seem the Rio 87 head would have been intented for 1987 Glitter'n Gold Rio. It may have been used on 1988 Rockin' Romance Rio, if the line had continued.

Jem MTV Jacket
JEM MTV Jacket Super Star Bag Doll This is a shocking addition to the Super Star bag dolls, so far almost all of the fashions for the Super Star bag dolls have been first year H32 Holograms, H32 Misfits, H-1 Rio heads, or not Jem related at all. So besides this being non-doll fashion, it is not even a boxed/carded doll fashion, but the mail-in offer. The doll seems to be a Blow Mold KO doll with Captain Action Batman's Red molded boots. These have surfaced in the Mego community, because of the Mego connection. So this may tell us that (H32) manufactured the MTV jacket, or that it is from (H-1) since that factory was responsible for the Rio doll and also Rob from Maxie. JEM MTV Jacket Super Star Bag Doll

Generic Rio looks like a produced Rio, but his hair seems to be shorter. He is wearing typical generic Super Stars clothing, colors usually very. These generic dolls have a Maxie doll head made out of generic plastic, similar to the body. I believe this head is Kristen and Carly's head mold.

Is on the back of their heads. I have also seen these dolls with long straight hair in different colors.
