Grey's Anatomy star and photographer Brad Everett Young was one of our own. Love him or hate him, he was the founder of “Jem’s Space” on myspace.com. He shared some great photography of Jem dolls, fashions, and prototypes. The information was not always correct, because his main source didn’t really have a connection to the Jem line. He is a devastating loss to the Jem community.

1988 Unproduced JEM Dolls, Fashions, & Playsets.

How do we know Hasbro was going to release dolls in 1988?

  • We have the Hasbro 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Catalog.
  • We have the characters and fashions added to the show -- and pictures sent from Hasbro to Sunbow to show them what the new dolls and fashions would look like.
  • And we also have ebay.com - many of the prototype fashions have been sold on ebay.

The doll boxes changed for 1988. Rockin' Romance Jem would have been about the same size as Rock'n Curl Jem's box, but the Jem logo was moved to the top, and the name of the doll was moved to the bottom. The box is almost an inch deeper then Rock'n Curl Jem's box.

Rockin' Romance Jem doll box size in the French 1988 Hasbro Catalog has the box size as 125mm x 365mm x 75mm (4.9" x 14.4" x 2.9").

I would assume American Beauty Jem would have had a very similar box -- more then likely the exact same size.

This new Hologram box seems thinner and about an inch wider then the Rockin' Romance Jem box. Once again the logo is moved to the top, and the name is much larger across the bottom, in comparison to the first two year Hologram boxes. While it's not as wide as the 1987 or 1986 boxes, it seems to be the same depth.

The dimensions of the French Hollywood Jem box also seems to be the same as this Holograms box -- 372mm x 150mm x 50mm (14.6" x 5.9" x 2.0"). The height and width seems to be switched.

So what do we know?

Rockin' Romance Jem, American Beauty Jem, Astral and Regine are the four new dolls shown the in the 1988 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair catalog. These dolls were also photographed and sent to Sunbow to be added to the show.

Other dolls would have been Hollywood Jem, the Stingers: Riot, Minx, Rapture, and originally the new Misfit's friend Graphix, but she was dropped early on. All these dolls were also photographed and sent to Sunbow to be added to the show. Hasbro asked Sunbow to drop Graphix because Hasbro felt there was already enough new characters.

New fashion sets could have been Video Costumes - Mardi Gras Fashions (as seen in Mardi Gras - Stormer's fashion was not part of this set). Stingers Fashions may have been part of the new 1988 Smashin' Fashions, reissue of the On Stage Fashions and Flip Side Fashions. International Fashions "Glitter'n Gold World Tour Fashions" probablly would not have been produed because Marketing hated the concept. It is unclear if there would have been Hollywood JEM Fashions because she was not the high end doll for 1988. (Rumor: Abra Cadabra Fashions with a magical backdrop playset ... similar to the Video Madness sets. At this point there is no offical word to prove this was really going to be line)

At one point, a redesign/"refresh" of Pizzazz, and maybe reissue of Clash, but the rest of the Misfits and Holograms where not planned for release ... they might have been planned when Graphix was going to come out, and dropped later. There may have been a refresh of Stormer and Roxy, but been dropped when the bands were dropped. Basically Kimber, Aja, Shana, Roxy and Stormer had the normal two shelf life for a toy/doll. Raya and Jetta were shorted a year because they would have not been released in 1988 because they are band members. Video and Danse were issued for a second year because they were not directly members of the bands.

There was also a regular priced JEM doll and a "Rio 'O Boy" doll that showed up on 1988 toy store inventory lists -- not much is known about either doll. It would seem this JEM the 1988 version of Jem/Jerrica and Flash'n Sizzle Jem. It would seem this doll would have come with the Hollywood Jem yellow jacket, light blue bustier, and red pants -- this fashion was a Hasbro design. The stock number for the doll was 4010 --which was originally the assortment number for the Misfits. The "Rio 'O Boy" doll may be the doll known as "Craig Phillips." The head is Rio 87 head and Rio like the rest of the1988 line would have had long hair too.

The French Catalog and French Media guide has a stock number of 4009 for Hollywood Jem. This catalog sells us that Hollywood Jem had a dress and was scented. Hasbro liked scenting plastic around that time. The French Media guide also has the Stingers, with assortment number of 4012.

The same 1988 toy store inventory lists also has the Jem Star Stage and Rock Backstager as available, the rest of the 1986/1987 lines was discontinued in 1988. But the French 1988 Hasbro Toy Line work sheet had the entire 1987 line, exception of the Starlight Girls, available for sale for 1988.

All of these dolls even the reissue Video and Danse would have come with longer Rock'n Curl length hair.

BridePop - It seems there was a wedding dress in the works for the Jemline, but there was also a wedding dress was made from a Jem doll to give to a Hasbro employee for her wedding present. Two very different wedding dresses. Hasbro would not relese a bridal Jem, because that would limit their main, so it was planned for release on a secondary charater Kimber.

The high end doll for 1988 would have been "Ruby Red Jem," orignally to code name for the Glitter'n Gold Jem/Jerrica doll. There was a new red dressed high end Jem doll, so they seemed be reussing the name.

Who is She?

So who is Hollywood Jem? Up until 2006 the Jem community thought it was the Jem with yellow jacket, red pants, and light blue bustier. This was the fashion Jem worn through out most of the Hollywood Jem episodes, it also was worn in several other episodes. There was an article with a sketch of this fashion, calling it the Hollywood Jem fashion.

By Nov of 2006 a Hasbro prototype of the silver "bridesmaid" dress showed up on ebay as the lead fashion for Hollywood Jem, the tights were also labeled as "Special Promo." When I originally talk to the seller about this fashion in April 2006, he did not know what it was, only saw a picture from the show and knew he had that fashion. Much closer to the auction he seemed to know/remember more. The Seller was sure Hasbro dropped the idea and brought it back, this silver fashion lost the hat due to cost. So the Hasbro designer thinks this dress was going to be the lead fashion still, at that point, and that no other fashions were made for the assortment by the time Jem was canceled. I have only been able to conferm that this dress was a Girls' Soft design, so only a fashion. Girls' Hard would have designed the doll fashions, and only one designer designed the Jem herself -- with the exception of the Rock 'n Curl dress.

But come to find out, Hasbro sent the picture of the pink dress to Sunbow and it was labeled Hollywood Jem. So there is still some confusion, but the picture(s) sent to Sunbow seems to be the final word, saying that Hasbro was going to release Hollywood Jem in the pink dress. There is also other information from Hasbro that seems to support the pink dress a doll release. And this has been backed up by Hasbro sources.

If you heard rumors of a second Hollywood Jem introduction to the show with the sliver dress as the lead, that rumor is untrue. The reason Hollywood Jem, the Stingers, Astral and Regine were introduced in January of 1988 (as the end of the 1987/1988 season) is because the Jem cartoon would have been canceled -- with or without the 1988 doll line being canceled. Hasbro was ending all the Sunbow shows, and Jem was the last one to be discontinued.

The French 1988 Hasbro catalog has American Beauty Jem (pictured) listed as Hollywood Jem. I would assume they put the wrong picture in that catalog. But the description says something about a cologne. So the doll would have been a scented doll. It also states that the doll would have had a ravishing dress, fine jewelry, and blonde hair. Seems that Hasbro was eliminating the pink hair for this doll, or for Jem all together. The only other thing we know is the box size is slightly different. It would seem the description is talking about another doll and not a renamed American Beauty Jem.

Fan Art by Luca (from my collection)

Graphix

Who is Graphix?

She would have been a friend of the Misfits, and also the Stingers. Graphix would have been the designer for the new album covers, logos and other stuff like that.

How do we know Graphix?

There was a prototype for the doll, and there was a character description made for the Jem Bible. Not too much is know since the character did not get introduced on the show before the show was canceled. Other then Hasbro pulled her from the 1988 line because they felt they had enough new dolls at that time.

What is Graphix’s instrument?

Graphix instrument is a video distorter. So Clash would use Distortion Modular wreck Jem concert (or prevent Jerrica from transforming into Jem), Graphix would wreck Jem's video shots and/or Jem's movies sets by using her video distorter like a magic wand.

Red Dress Pizzazz

Why a Red Dress?

Pizzazz was getting a fresh new look and longer hair style. Prototype w/new head mold can be seen on the Prototypes from ebay - New Dolls page

Why only Pizzazz?

The bands (Holograms/Misfits) were being discontinued. Only Pizzazz, Graphix and maybe Clash would have been released in 1988. But these 1988 Misfits seem to have been dropped long before the line was canceled.
