Grey's Anatomy star and photographer Brad Everett Young was one of our own. Love him or hate him, he was the founder of “Jem’s Space” on myspace.com. He shared some great photography of Jem dolls, fashions, and prototypes. The information was not always correct, because his main source didn’t really have a connection to the Jem line. He is a devastating loss to the Jem community. |

No prototypes or pictures of “basic” Hollywood Jem have surfaced. Only an illustration by Dick Tahsin based on a work room sketch or presentation illustration. It was with the "DOLL READER" articles from April and May 1989. The fashion showed up in episode 5205-38 -- "One Jem Too Many" which aired in September of 1987, and featured heavily in the 5205-56 & 57 - "Hollywood Jem part 1 & 2" episodes. Almost nothing is known about the doll, but the Hollywood Star was a paper accessory. One of the designers was asked to specifically create the Hollywood Star. I believe the makeup screening may be the same as 4004 Rockin’ Romance Jem, because I beleive it would have been manufactured at factory H44. Same factory that produced 1987 Flash’n Sizzle Jem/Jerrica and also produced 1987 Rock’n Curl Jem with the same screen in a different color.
It feels like this is the regular Jem doll for 1988. But instead of being called something different like the Flash’n Sizzle Jem/Jerrica of 1987, Hasbro moved the regular doll under the new Hollywood theme of 1988. More than likely Hasbro did that to help push Jem to a movie star from being just a pop music star. |

For “scented” Hollywood Jem prototype pictures did surface. She was also mentioned in European 1988 Pre-Toy Fair catalogs, but picture was American Beauty Jem. So those catalogs give us a stock number for 4009, and a description saying she is the first fully blonde Jem, with original jewelry and her own perfume. This is a very basic translation from the French catalog.
The “scented” Hollywood Jem doll was probably going to be scented just like Perfect Prom Maxie which was released in 1988. So I believe the all blonde hair may not have been a feature, but a necessity. The scented hair might not have been available in pink and/or scented hair should have had an extra cost – meaning the pink hair may have been eliminated due to cost reasons. Perfect Prom Maxie was manufactured at factory H22 same as 1987 Glitter'n Gold Jem/Jerrica, so it would seem “scented” Hollywood Jem would have been manufactured at the same factory. I believe “scented” Hollywood Jem would have shared the same makeup screening as 4007 American Beauty Jem. That would give “scented” Hollywood Jem the cost of the medal screens, and that extra cost would not be needed for making a screening for American Beauty Jem. That would be same process H44 used in 1987 for Flash’n Sizzle Jem/Jerrica and Rock’n Curl Jem, and I believe H44 would have done for “basic” Hollywood Jem and Rockin’ Romance Jem in 1988.
Like the 1990 Bride Pony, I believe that 1988 scented Jem and Maxie dolls lead to the creation of the Prom Queen Sweetheart Sister Ponies. |

The Pink & Gold Suit from 5205-63 Straight from the Heart is one of the Hollywood Jem assortment fashions. I have the PTO (Preliminary Turn Over) pattern calling the assortment “Jem Special Theme Asst/Hollywood.” The dress in the cartoon, is basically the Jerrica version of what was a Flip Side Fashion, with the Jerrica skirt was shortened. I have a costing pattern for a different Hollywood Jem assortment dress that was not in the show, this pattern calls the assortment “Hollywood Asst.” The silver Bridesmaid dress was labeled “Special Promo,” so that could be indication that it was meant to be part of the Hollywood Jem Fashion Assortment. I have poloids of a 4th dress that has similar elements as the blue dress Jem wears on the boat in 5205-61 - "The Day Music Died." So there may be a connection between the Hollywood Jem Fashion assortment and that specific dress. |

Might be another Hollywood Jem fashion, because it seems to be on the top shelf in the fashion department at Hasbro very far right -- to the right of the the "Special Promo"/Bridesmaid Dress. |

This might be a Hollywood Jem Fashion Assortment prototype, I never got a confirmation on what this dress was, so it could also be something from the Mardi Gras Fashion Assortment. |

| Nothing Concrete, but you have to wonder ... |

We know that “scented” Hollywood Jem was from Hasbro. We know that silver bridesmaid dress was also from Hasbro too. With acquiring the poloids and pattern, we now know that “Jem Special Theme Asst / Hollywood - Pink & Gold Suite” was a Hasbro fashion appearing in 5205-63 - "Straight from the Heart." It seems like the “Treasure Hunt”/“This is Farewell” fashion is on that top self in the fashion department photo. I have asked every designer I have talked to, if they recognized any of the later Jem cartoon fashions as Hasbro designs, but always told they did not recognize them. That includes asking the designer of the dress from 5205-63 - "Straight from the Heart." So seeing the Polaroids and patterns, makes me wonder if any of the other Sunbow fashions were actual Hasbro designed fashions too. |

The first dress is another dress that showed up in the Hollywood Jem episodes. It’s an odd dress, because it has a lot of extra elements that it seems like Sunbow would have avoided animating if they could. The 5205-53 - “Beauty and the Rock Promoter” is another odd one. The promo poster has a dress with roses. The roses are an element from Sindy’s 1987 Roses ‘n’ Romance dress and are a part of the cartoon version of Kimber’s wedding dress. It could easily be just be coincidence. The actual fashion Pizzazz and Jem wear on stage is a very similar in style to Hasbro’s 1989 Dance ‘n Romance Maxie. So it feels like the Maxie dress could have been an altered version from this Jem dress, if it was a Hasbro design. The rust colored dress from 5205-58 – “The Stingers Hit Town: part 1” seems like it could be a Hasbro design. Again, it is a similar cut to the 1989 Dance ‘n Romance Maxie. And I question if it might be the High End Red Dress Jem dress. She also seems to have a different hair style, which is more often seen with Hasbro doll related designs, over Hasbro fashion assortment designs and especially Sunbow fashion designs. |

The blue dress and jacket in 5205-61 – “The Day Music Died” feels like an updated version of the Jem/Jerrica fashion above. The head piece seems to be the same, and the sleeves on the jacket are the same style as the sleeves on the Jerrica version of the dress. It could be related, or might not be. This is the same episode that Rockin’ Romance Jem is introduced. I wouldn’t think the 5205-60 – “Midsummer Night’s Madness” or 5205-62 – “That Old Houdini Magic” are Hasbro design, but I didn’t think 5205-63 – “Straight from the Heart” dress was either. With Jem wearing a Hasbro design in 5205-63 - "Straight from the Heart," the other Jem fashion from the same episodes could be possible Hasbro design too. |
