Grey's Anatomy star and photographer Brad Everett Young was one of our own. Love him or hate him, he was the founder of “Jem’s Space” on myspace.com. He shared some great photography of Jem dolls, fashions, and prototypes. The information was not always correct, because his main source didn’t really have a connection to the Jem line. He is a devastating loss to the Jem community.

the JEM Head Castings and Molds

Wax Head Molds Cincinnati Museum Center another collection coming
in the future

Super Master
A Super Master of the Jem/Jerrica head was created because Hasbro thought they would be selling so many dolls that the original molds would wear out.

A Super Master is extremely rare, because these are an extra expense and not made for most toy lines.

You will recognize this as a China produced head, notice the back of the head has a cut out, where the "HASBRO 1985" was placed separately on the heads.

The Head has "S / JEM 1" imprinted on the crown, and "Super Master" was written on it.

Wax Castings
The sculptor(s) of the Jem dolls created many variations for each head. The following faces are made of sculptors wax.
1

2 looks similar to a 1987 Jem, or maybe a variation to the 1988 Jem.

3b looks similar to Clash/Danse/Jetta but one of these has "1988 Jem" written on it. It sounds like this head was rejected for Jem/Jerrica, but may have been planned for a new Pizzazz, Rapture, and maybe Graphix.

4 looks like a wide close mouth smiling Jem/Jerrica.

Plaster Casting
HASBRO "M"-1 These one has some defects, air bubbles developed with the plaster was pored into the mold. The creator said Hasbro needed a vacuum chamber, to stop the bubbles in the faces, but they would not buy one. So it was a game of chance.
M was Jem's "work in progress" name.

Dynacast Hardcopy
M-4 this Dynacast mold would have been used to create the final metal mold which the produced doll head was made in.

Silicone Recorders (a.k.a. Silicone Molds)
  • The wax castings would have been held in a paper cup, then the silicone poured in around the castings.
  • Then after the silicone dried, the wax was melted and poured out.
  • Then another liquid material was poured into that cavity that was left. It have been Dynacast.
  • After it dried then the casting was removed from the mold. This mold was broken (cracked down the side) to get the casting out, it would have only been used only once.
It says "Jem Smiling 2A Record" The Dynacast castings was then used to create the final metal mold.
You can see some of the facial feature, along with one of the ears.
(The nose looks a little out of shape because of the lighting I used)

These are two more of the silicone recorders with the wax castings still inside. They are still in the paper cups used to create the mold. There are no markings so I do not know what faces these are. So who knows what face waits inside.

Plaster Mold
This is the outside of the plaster mold. This mold has very little detail, and was made earlier in the process of make the doll head. Left mold says "+99"...It also "may" say Record and Hasbro, but the lettering is so light, it really hard to tell what it does say...for sure.
This is the inside of that mold, you can still see some clay for the head this mold was made of.
(I am surprised that it has such an odd outside shape, the molds I have made where placed in a containers, so the sides are very smooth...taking the shape of the containers. It looks like they added extra plaster to the outside as the mold this mold was drying.)

Rio 87

It has been discovered, the Rob (from Maxie) Head Mold is really a Rio Head Mold. It seems Hasbro was going to give Glitter'n Gold Rio (1987) a new head mold. But for whatever reason they did not use it -- I'm assuming Hasbro was running out of time, so they just used Rio 86 head mold to save time.

The unpainted Superhead Molds says Rio 87.

This Head Mold was thought to be Craig Phillips -- but this proves that it was really a Rio head mold.

Paris/Regine "Mulatto" Head castings
Paris (Regine) was going to be a 1988 doll, as seen in the 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Catalog. Hasbro was wanting a new head mold for their new mulatto doll. I have been in contact with the designer that created the new head mold for Paris. These photos are of three head molds she was working on, for Hasbro and Integrity Toys. Paris is in the middle. She gave them to me when I won one of the sketches. I won the 4th sketch. She also create head molds for Diney's Pocahontas and Dreamworks Prince of Egypt.

She also emailed me digital photos of her sketches.
