Wedding Kimber & Male
(image
borrowed from
Judith Nelson online portfolio) |
Wedding Kimber is nothing new, it had been strongly rumored for years -- and then Judith Nelson, the freelance artist, put the top of the dress on her online portfolio.
But I can now confirm that Wedding Kimber was in the works and a Groom doll was planned. During a graphic meeting on Oct. 21, 1986 one of the designer was tasked with designing "Jem Wedding Kimber & Male," the deadline for plush was Jan. 12, 1987 and deadline for PTO was March 23, 1987 were given.
- Plush on Jan. 12, 1987 was the deadline of when the fashions (softgoods/the doll fashions) had to be designed.
- PTO (Preliminary Turn Over) on March 23, 1987 was the deadline when the fabric choices, fashion, face paint, hairstyle and specs, etc., had to be completed.
What is interesting about that Jan. 12, 1987 deadline, is it was exactly one year before the Sunbow's Wedding Kimber storyline aired in Hollywood Jem: part 2 "And The Winner Is..." (5205-57). Also interesting is that the design needed to be finished 8 days after the Glitter and Gold (5205-26) episode aired on March 15, 1987. It gives us an idea of how far in advance the dolls for 1988 were being designed, and the deadlines that were set for them.
The designer of Wedding Kimber, did not originally remember designing her a few years ago, when I asked if she remember this wedding dress (picture above). But she found the notes giving her the deadlines for the dolls. She does not clearly remember the rest of the dress, but thinks it was a short straight skirt with hip flounces that turned into the train. She is not 100% sure and she also does not remember actually designing the male (groom) doll. |
No name was given for the Male doll, so who knows if he would have been a completely new character or if Hasbro would have taken the name Jeff or Shawn from the cartoon -- similar to Hasbro using 3 Starlight Girls from the cartoon and developing them into dolls. When the Wedding Kimber concept was being developed, Jeff had only been in the Starbright episodes (5205-1 to 5205-3) and Shawn was only in the World Hunger Shindig (5205-4). Both seem too insignificant of characters at the time to be considered as the groom for Kimber. But if Hasbro had decided to make one of them Kimber's groom, that might be why Jeff was in Glitter and Gold (5205-26) or Shawn was in Scandal (5205-28). If Hasbro wanted their characters added into more episodes, it seems like Scandal would be more likely choice, since the Glitter and Gold episode was in development around the same time the Wedding Kimber & Male dolls was being designed. Of course this is just speculation since we don't have notes from the writer or Sunbow telling them to add either Jeff or Shawn -- we may never know for sure.
Since the Stingers were being prototyped around the same time (December 12, 1986), and the addition of the male doll Chaos (Riot), Hasbro may have canceled Kimber's groom. Male dolls do not sell nearly as well as female dolls, so Hasbro may have wanted to limit the number of male dolls being released in a single year. And more recently I have discovered that Hasbro was working on a budget Rockin' Romance Rio doll, so I don't see Hasbro putting out 3 male dolls in 1988. |
From the first time I saw the illustration of the wedding dress, I noticed that the lace in the sleeves was a silver version of the lace used for the Glitter'n Gold doll body suit and hairbow. So with the fabric used and the fact that a male doll as planned to be released with her,, I feel like the "Wedding Kimber & Male" were a silver follow up to 1987 Glitter'n Gold Jem/Jerrica and Rio. |

The Wedding Kimber dress from the 5205-56 & 57 Hollywood Jem episodes does not match the above Judith Nelson Presentation Illustration. So there must have been a specific design change for the dress. Since Kimber doesn’t actually marry anyone, maybe the Groom doll idea was dropped. The wedding dress more than likely changed around the time Hasbro decided to do the “Jem Girl” Rebrand, and drop the Misfits. Hasbro was removing most of the rocker/band elements from the line and trying to make Jem more girl centric.
I can’t help but notice that the Wedding Kimber dress in the cartoon has the same flowers as the 1987 Sindy Romance ‘n’ Roses dress and similar to 1987 Sindy White Wedding. There has to be a connection to those Sindy dolls, leading Hasbro to updating the design of the 1988 Wedding Kimber dress with the flower motif.
I also thinking there is a connection to 1990 My Little Pony – Pony Bride. I think the cake may have been designed to go with the Wedding Kimber. It may not have been a boxed doll accessory, but there could have been a wedding playset or even a wedding “Video Madness” playset in mind. I even wonder if a playset had a dove theme, because doves are predominant in the video(s) associated with Wedding Kimber. 1988 Astral was to come with a dove accessory, and 1988 Rockin’ Romance Jem and 1988 Minx would have come with 1987 “Video Madness” accessories.
The designers at Hasbro could have easily removed a topper related to Kimber’s wedding and replaced it will the pony topper. That would be an easy change at any time during the manufacturing process. So even if Hasbro had complete tooling with a Kimber topper, it would be easy to change to the MLP topper. It looks like the top of the cake may be molded separately from the cake. It looks like there is a seam around the edge of the top and side of the top layer of cake. Even if that seam was not there on a Kimber version, it could be proof that the Kimber topper was removed and replaced. But even if the cake has no connection to Kimber or the Jem brand, 1990 Pony Bride maybe very likely be inspired by the Wedding Kimber concept. But I think that seam could be telling us that it was Kimber's Wedding cake and it was very far along in the production process. |
