| It is thought
that these are 1988 Prototype, I don't know if I believe
this. We are not sure if the Starlight Girls were going
to continued, or if they would have separate fashions
in 1988, or include new girls 1988. And with tags with
Log #s or info from a Hasbro employee, we may never
know for sure.
- Starlight Girls-Krissie
It seems like this might have been a prototype for
Ashley's fashion. If it had same fabric, it would
be a perfect jacket for that fashion.
- Watermelon Fashion ??
It seems like this is a prototype of Banee's fashion.
Except for the watermelon and fabrics, this fashion
looks like the same fashion as the produced fashion.
Update: There was Starlight Girls
Fashion planned, but nothing was developed for assortment.
Because of a lack of interest from the 1987 Toy Fair
the Starlight Girls Fashions were not ordered/requested
to be developed. |

Now
it is unclear if Rama Llama was ever "sold" as a Jem item.
But she was developed to be part of the Jem line. Luckily
after Jem was canceled Hasbro switched Rama Llama from
a Jem mail-in to a My Little Pony mail-in. This
might be the only reason we see Rama Llama today.

One of the last additions to the 1988 Jem line was the third Rio doll. It seems Hasbro wanted Rio to be a budget doll to go with Rockin’ Romance Jem. Rockin’ Romance Rio would have black flocked cotton pants, a black/silver brocade jacket, white crinkle polyester dickie, hot pink satin cummerbund, with hot pink and white pock-a-dot bowtie. Below is the costing patterns, which were the first pattern made. I also have the three cut patterns: one being the original, one getting a fuller jacket, and the “Final Draft” being fitted and including an attached dickie to the cumber bond/pant. I don’t have a PTO (Preliminary Turn Over) pattern, so the Rio doll or the line might have been canceled or put on hold before Rio was ready to be turned over for production.
It’s not the same pattern, but for some reason I feel like 1989 Dance ‘n Romance Rob was based on Rockin’ Romance Rio. It’s hard to know what headmold this 1988 Rio would have had, because we don’t know why the "RIO 87" head was not used for 1987 Glitter’n Gold Rio. So this doll may have shared the RIO 87 head mold with Maxie’s 1988 Rob. It seems like there is a good chance that the “Super Star” bag doll we know as “Craig Phillips” could be this Rockin’ Romance Rio. The RIO 87/“Craig Phillips” doll shares the same screening as Rob, which was the case with Hasbro 1987 budge doll Rock’n Curl Jem sharing the Flash’n Sizzle make up screening. And I believe Rockin’ Romance Jem and American Beauty Jem would have shared make up screening with the two Hollywood Jem dolls. The RIO 87/“Craig Phillips” doll also has a different shade of purple for his hair color. If the doll head was being manufactured for Glitter’n Gold Rio, it would seem like the RIO 87/“Craig Phillips” would have the same 1987 hair color and eyebrow color as Glitter’n Gold Rio.
Some of the Hasbro employees had referenced the 1988 Rio as “Rio 'O Boy.” I have a feeling it could be a code name for “Rockin’ Romance Rio.” The “Rio 'O Boy” name could have indicated that this RIO 87/“Craig Phillips” head mold was going to be used, since it’s much younger looking than the original Rio dolls. |

Jem "Wedding Kimber & Male" was assigned to a designer on Oct. 21, 1986. But she does not remember the male doll being designed. |
