Just like the episode "5205-17 - In Search Of The Stolen Album" the JEM Master Tapes were found. But unlike the episodes when the French lessons were switched with Misfits album, this time it was Spanish translations. These Grand Master reels were recored and sent to Mexico to make Spanish versions of the songs. On May 22, 1987, a 2-mono track instrumental recording was created. It has all the songs that appear on the 1986 Holograms and 1986 Misfits doll cassettes. The date seems to tell us that the Mexican Jem dolls might have come out over a year after the Asian manufactured dolls, but we also know that through some of the 2nd issue Holograms assortment doll heads showing up on the Mexican dolls.

So this reel includes songs from the 15 "Super Sunday"/"Super Saturday" segments ("Truly Outrageous!" movie/first 5 full "JEM" episodes) with the exception of the song "Truly Outrageous" which was not including on any doll cassette and the songs "Deception" and "I've Got My Eye On You" which were on the cassette that came with Rio in the countries where he was available. The interesting thing about this reel specifically is the tape seems spliced together for each song. Like the the clear ribbon at the beginning and end of the side of a cassette tape -- there seems to be the equivalent ribbon between each song. Which probably saved this Grand Master for being recorded over, because it made the tape unusual for re-recording.

On October 8, 1987 three 4-Track Grand Masters were created and sent to Mexico. This time they had track 1 as a mono instrumental, track 2 as a mono group or backing vocals recording, track 3 as a mono lead vocals recording, with a mono 4th track being a sound at 60Hz. The 60Hz track is so that the engine who receives the reels could make sure the timing was correct, based on that tone. The instrumental and vocal tracks being separated is really cool, so the instrumentation, the backing harmonies and the lead vocals can be heard in absolute clarity. But the bad thing about these tracks are they are not in stereo.

Surprising most of these songs were translated and re-recorded into Spanish, because October of 1987 is when Hasbro pulled the plug on Jem. Some of the Spanish version are songs found on the 1987 dolls cassettes, but there are also Spanish version for songs that never made it to cassettes for the rest of the world. For some reason "Deception" was including, but "Truly Outrageous" and "I've Got My Eye On You" were not.

This is where things really feel like the episode "5205-17 - In Search Of The Stolen Album," because Reel 1 and Reel 2 were recorded over. These Grand Master reels are very expensive, so once Jem was done they just recorded something else over the Jem recordings. It's heart breaking, but Reel 2 was transfered to a DAT (Digital Audio Tape) in 1992 to preserve the music. They recorded the instrumental track and followed it with the full song including all three tracks (instrumental, backing vocals, and lead vocals.) That way they could use the music as it was originally intended for the Spanish translations, but we lost the separate backing vocals and lead vocal tracks when they made the DAT. It seems like they would have treated Reel 1 the same way and created a DAT Master for it too, but if they did it lost to time. Most of the songs from Reel 1 were mixed and or put on a 5" tape and a 7" tape, it seems to be the Spanish version on the first side, and instrumentals on the second side, but a lot of the recordings from the 5" or a 7" tape are lost to years of neglect and decay.

Reel 3 survived, and it was the best reel to survive. It has the full version of "Surprise, Surprise" which was heavily edited in the "5205-25 - Culture Clash" episode. It also has "Love's Not Easy" which was recorded, but did not air in the episode "5205-20 - Island of Deception". Reel 3 is also slightly later songs in the show, so it is songs that did not end up on 1987 doll cassettes. So many of the instrumental versions have never been heard before this reel was found. It seems like the person who put the Reel 3 together has a since of humor, because the backing vocals and the lead vocals are switched on "Surprise, Surprise," so the lead are on track 2 and the backing are on track 3.
