Grey's Anatomy star and photographer Brad Everett Young was one of our own. Love him or hate him, he was the founder of “Jem’s Space” on myspace.com. He shared some great photography of Jem dolls, fashions, and prototypes. The information was not always correct, because his main source didn’t really have a connection to the Jem line. He is a devastating loss to the Jem community.

JEMstars - JEM Character Bios
Alex of the Mongrels
Alex Couto™

of the Mongrels

Alex Couto was a character created by Christy Marx for the Sunbow Jem theatrical movie, along with twin sister Alyx Couto. Rumor has it Hasbro pulled the Jem movie because the My Little Pony movie and G.I. Joe movie did so poorly in the movie theaters. But within days of the My Little Pony movie release (June 6, 1986), a few months before Transformers (August 8, 1986,) and a over a year before G.I. Joe movie release (August 14, 1987,) the elements from that Jem movie were being reworked into a 2-part episode "Entropy's Dog" for the Jem series (June 9, 1986.) Other elements from the movie became the 5205-26 "Glitter and Gold" episode and 5205-30 "Talent Search" episodes, to give a reference of the early the movie was being considered in relation to the series.

We would have meet the Mongrels, (Alex Couto, Alyx Couto, and a heavy metal drummer and bass player) when Eric takes the Misfits to clubs to find an opening act -- this became part of "Talent Search" when the Misfits were looking to add the new Misfit and find Jetta. The Mongrels music was just okay, and the Misfits like that because the Misfits did not want their opening act to be better than them. The Mongrels music/video was going to be rough, tough and unyielding, with elements like rough as nails, heart of stone, hard as steel. To agree to become the Misfits opening act, the Mongrels request a fancy synthesizer. Eric says no, but Pizzazz over ruled him. Techrat is working on something that looks like a synthesizer, which has artificial intelligence like Synergy. So the Mongrels decide to take it as their synthesizer. Techrat tries to get Eric to stop them, but Eric lets them take it. So the Mongrels plug their guitars into the synthesizer while warming up for their next show and their music sounded so much better. But it wasn't that the Mongrels sounded better, but Entropy was hypnotizing the listeners into thinking the Mongrels sounded great. This ended up making the Mongrels more popular than Jem and the Misfits, and then Misfits Music becomes Mongrels Music -- but Entropy planned on using hypnotism to take over the world. Jem's Jemstar Earrings canceled out Entropy's hypnosis thanks to Synergy, so Entropy viewed Jem/Jerrica as a threat. Entropy then manipulated people and situations to destroy Jem/Jerrica's world. In the movie version Jerrica looses Starlight Music, KJEM, Starlight House, and the the Starlight Girls are taken by social works. The Mongrels replace Jem and the Holograms for a congressional concert, so Jem with the help of the Misfits and Synergy have to stop Entropy before he hypnotizes all of congress.

At this point we don't know how far the Mongrels episode got in development past an outline for the episode or if any drawings for the Mongrels were created -- and it does not sound like their developement got that far. But it is an odd coincidence the Mongrels were going to have a male singer/female singer (June 9, 1986) and then Hasbro developed the Stingers with Riot as the male lead singer (prototype date December 12, 1986.) Especially since Hasbro had a strict rule of only releasing a male dolls as a love interest for Jem, until the Stingers. So I can't help but feel that Alex and Alyx lead Hasbro into developing the Stingers dynamic. Riot and Rapture as the dolls feel like they could be twins, or at least related, with Minx added to make the Stingers the typical assortment of three dolls. Even their early names of Chaos (Riot) and Fiasco (Rapture) feel like they could have a family connection, while Jazz (Minx) is a name that does not exactly fit with the other two. There is even a mention of sharp angels for the video of the Mongrels and the Stingers have triangles, parallelogram and stars for graphic elements on their stage costumes/boxed doll. This is complete speculation, and there currently no known connect between the Mongrels and the Stingers dolls that Hasbro created. But there is just too many coincidence that make me wonder of the Mongrels evolved into the Stingers.

5205-58 and 5205-59 "The Stingers Hit Town"

Even if there is not a connection to the Hasbro dolls, many of the storyline elements of the Mongrels morphed into the Stingers storyline. The twin angle was definitely not brought forward to the Stingers, but Entropy was added to the Jem Bible as the name of Minx's synthesizer. And the Bible included the storyline of Techrat's unusual improvements to Minx's synthesizer Entropy. Even if Alex and Alyx were lost in the evolution of the storyline, Entropy may have been a key part of future episodes if the series had continued.

The Stingers had a flare for mind control and manipulating people which is not far off from Entropy's hypnosis. Even the recording of Riot's vocals makes me wonder -- Gordon Gordy vocals were recorded in two different octaves and played over each other to make a unique sound. So there is an element to the Stingers sound that is manufactured or altered, similar to what Entropy may have done to the Mongrels vocals when he was hypnotizing the listeners.
